    Written by Mark Wheeller
Mark Wheeller's part fact/part fiction play Legal Weapon tells the story of a sixth-from couple, Andy and Jazz, whose romance is punctuated by a holiday at Butlins, exams, brushes with the law and the death of his grandad. Andy spends the inheritance from his grandad on a power car and flunks his exams, whilst Jazz goes to University and forms a relationship with footballer Matt Irvine. Andy’s life is turned upside down when he kills a moped-rider in a high-speed crash and is imprisoned for the crime.

APE first toured the play in January 1996. The production lasts about fifty minutes, is packed full of physical theatre, meaty naturalistic scenes, visual gags and vocal sound effects. The show is complemented by a game show workshop, Tweedy's Travels.
The production confronts the issues of excessive speed, peer pressure and attitudes amongst young drivers. Using tight stylised physical theatre techniques, which take the audience through a roller coaster of emotions, it is a powerful and emotive road safety drama that moves at a blistering pace.

It shows that they need to combine newly acquired skills with a safe, responsible attitude towards driving if they are not to put themselves and other vulnerable road users at risk. This drama, combined with other educational initiatives, emphasizes the fact that driving skills alone are not enough to keep young drivers out of danger.
